12 crystal-clear freshwater lagoons in 1,500 acres of tropical forest · A natural treasure unique in the Caribbean
Private Ecological Reserve
The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve is one of the most extraordinary natural treasures in the Caribbean: a private park of 1,500 acres of tropical forest inside Punta Cana Resort. Its heart is formed by 12 freshwater lagoons fed by underground springs whose waters connect to the sea through channels hidden beneath the earth — a hydrological system unique in the world.
The name "Ojos Indígenas" (Indigenous Eyes) honors the Taíno people, the island's original inhabitants, who called these lagoons "eyes" for their perfectly circular shape and astonishing water clarity. Each lagoon bears a Taíno name; the largest and most iconic is Guáma. The waters display intense turquoise and emerald hues, are surprisingly cool compared to the Punta Cana heat, and are remarkably clear thanks to natural ground filtration.
The reserve protects over 500 plant species, dozens of endemic birds including the Ridgway's Hawk and the Rhinoceros Iguana, blue crabs, turtles, and wild mammals. The guided tour (2h 45min) follows fully shaded, well-maintained trails — flat and accessible for families — with active projects in beekeeping, bird conservation, and iguana breeding.
Before you visit
The reserve enforces strict rules to preserve the purity of its lagoons and the balance of the ecosystem.
